Dr. Philip Schoenfeld — Gastroenterology Researcher in Michigan

Based in Detroit, Michigan, Philip Schoenfeld, MD, MSEd, MSc (Epi) researches interventions to improve the quality of colorectal cancer screening with colonoscopy, the application of evidence-based medicine (EBM) to the practice of gastroenterology, and conducts meta-analysis about treatments for irritable bowel syndrome. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Health Administration, the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

Because of his background in clinical epidemiology and EBM, Dr. Schoenfeld has been invited to co-author multiple clinical practice guidelines, including the ACG/ASGE Position Statement on Quality Indicators for Colonoscopy, the ACG Guideline on Colorectal Cancer Screening, and the ACG Evidence-Based Monographs on the Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Constipation.

He has served as Associate Editor of GASTROENTEROLOGY and the American Journal of Gastroenterology as well as on the editorial boards of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology. He is also the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Evidence-Based GI, an American College of Gastroenterology online publication.

He has published more than 250 original research studies, book chapters, editorials, and abstracts, and his original research has been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the British Medical Journal, GASTROENTEROLOGY, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology among other journals. Dr. Schoenfeld is a popular speaker who has given more than 150 invited lectures at national meetings and GI Grand Rounds at academic medical centers.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Schoenfeld was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserves. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and served on the USNS Comfort, the Navy’s East Coast-based hospital ship. He separated from the US Navy after 11 years in 2000 with the rank of Commander.
